This discovery came about during a conversation with a mountaineer whose alpine grandfather knew Samivel in the Alpes-Maritimes in the 1930s.
Saint-Paul de Vence, a renowned destination in the French Riviera, is famous for its long artistic tradition: Marc Chagall, Yves Montand, Jacques Prévert—any visitor to the village will quickly think of these artists. But mountain lovers will be surprised to learn that the artist Samivel, widely recognized for his mountain watercolors, also lived there for much of his life, alternating with his family home in Les Contamines.
Born Paul Gayet-Tancrède, this multifaceted artist was a pioneering advocate for nature conservation.
